Regulations when considering Shipping or exporting a Car to Kenya are:

Age Limit: A car should not be more than 8 years old since the date of manufacture or date of first registration.

Left Hand Drive vehicles: Are not allowed for registration unless they have a special purpose.

Road Worthiness Inspection (RWI): All cars shipped into Kenya must be inspected prior to shipment by the Kenyan government agency QISJ.

The major points of the RWI are:

  • The vehicle must be less than 8 years of age
  • The vehicle must be right hand drive
  • The vehicle must pass a safety and mechanical inspection
  • Vehicle odometer reading must be consistent with the documented mileage. No fraudulent tampering or replacement clusters permitted.
  • All vehicles presented for inspection must have at least 4 months MOT remaining.

Duty Exemptions for Returning Residents

A returning resident may import one customs duty exempt motor vehicle provided that:

  • The person has attained age of 18 years
  • The vehicle is registered in his/her name for a period of at least 365 days excluding the shipment period.
  • The vehicle should arrive within 90 days of the owners arrival
  • The shipper must have stayed in the foreign country for more than two years
  • Within the two years that the shipper has been out of the country, he/she must not have visited and stayed in Kenya for a period exceeding and aggregate 90 days

To clear the vehicle the following documents are required:

  • Original passport to confirm dates of exits/entries
  • Original vehicle registration document to confirm ownership
  • Bill of Lading
  • Pre Inspection Certificate
  • KRA Pin Card (Kenya Revenue Authority)
  • It is likely that KRA will require the importer to present oneself as proof of being in the country

Transit Time and Shipping Methods

Depending on which service is used, the transit time from port to port tends to be 21 days or more. We offer a range of shipping methods such as Roll on Roll off as well as containers. We advise our clients on the best choice to meet their time lines, needs and budget.
